Taking a comprehensive perspective is essential because creating an optimal treatment plan requires considering many variable, and small, but critical risk factors which are unique to each patient.
Attention to small details, while keeping the big picture of each patient’s case in mind, is key in creating a treatment plan tailored to needs of each patient’s dentition. These factors must be well-balanced and thoughtfully considered in each patient differently.
Dr.Jae Chang has more than 20 years of general dentistry to combine his specialized knowledge in the contemporary and ever-evolving modern Periodontics, including the regenerative element and tissue engineering in Periodontics.

Dr. Jae W. Chang is a board-certified periodontist/dentist with extensive experience in dentistry spanning 24 years, in the Etobicoke and Hamilton regions of Ontario in Canada. He graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Western Ontario in 2000 and over the years, he has continued to learn about dentistry, focusing on modern technologies, with a specific interest in oral implants, its maintenance and complication management.
In 2003, Dr Chang embarked on a part-time residency training course with Dr George Zarb at the University of Toronto, on the topic of implantology. In 2015, Dr Chang pursued an Master of Science degree in Oral Implantology at one of the most prestigious universities in Frankfurt, Germany, the J.W. Goethe University. Following his degree, his thesis on Implant Stability Quotient and Bone-to-Implant contact area analyses of immediately placed implants in Human Cadavers was selected for presentation at the Congress in Oral Implantology in Germany at the same university and ITI (International Team of Implantology, Switzerland) North America Congress in Chicago.
This inspired him to pursue full-time graduate study to specialize in Periodontics along with the advanced study leading to the Master of Science in Craniofacial Science at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada in 2018. During his formal training at the university, he was awarded “Doctor of Dental Medicine Teaching Award’ in recognition of excellence in teaching for two consecutive years. Dr. Chang’s theses on peri-implant disease (Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis of Biofilm on Dental Implants Explanted Due to Peri-Implantitis) was selected for poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology in November 2020 and again presented during Research Day at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2021.
He is a fellow with the Royal Colleges of Dentist of Canada in the specialty of Periodontics and he has achieved the diplomate status with the American Board of Periodontology. Periodontal pockets are diseased gum surrounding the teeth, at which abundant bacteria(biofilm) exits to damage the foundation (periodontium) of your natural teeth. Those deep pockets need to be shallow for easy cleaning at home and professional maintenance.
Replacing missing teeth with biocompatible Titanium or Zirconium alloys to restore your smile to its full potential. Thorough planning with a finish in mind is a cornerstone of its success
Early detection of peri-implant diseases is essential, and management/maintenance protocol must be in place to monitor and evaluate the status of implants. There are many different ways to face these challenges, and a thorough explanation of these diseases must be a foundation of management
The importance of having strong, healthy-looking pink gum (not loose red mucosa) around the teeth/implants are getting more attention as these have a critical role in the prevention/management of periodontal/peri-implant diseases
This procedure may benefit those roots exposed/receding with esthetic concerns, sensitivity, or progression. Not only would it stop its progression, but the newly formed gum is strong to enhance the marginal gingiva integrity
Suppose a recipient site of the bone is too shallow or narrow for an ideal dimension of implant placement. In that case, various procedures can make the sites more suitable for the proper placement of implants.
A fractured tooth may have a second chance by having its embedded structure more exposed for crown coverage to protect the core with a post. It has its limitations, and Dr.Chang will discuss benefits vs. risks. but for those who would like to avoid an extraction/implant, this can be a valuable option
Whether it shows more gum or the front teeth look short when you smile, a periodontist must identify the cause with a periodontist to correct the teeth/gum aesthetics. Esthetic crown lengthening is for shortened teeth due to their delayed eruption or over-extended gum tissue in need of simple trimming
It is not rare to see some incisors or canines impacted, preventing the proper development of dentition for adolescents. Early detection and exposing them with periodontal consideration is critical. Multi-disciplinary approach with an orthodontist to guide its eruption is essential.
For those implants that need space in the maxillary sinus, this procedure will lift the sinus floor, placing some bone graft materials to reposition the sinus to place implants safely. There are two different methods, and Dr.Chang will explain the pros/cons of each option for your specific case
In case of abnormal tissue is detected in your oral cavity, given no other medical risks and anatomical limitation, a biopsy may be collected and sent for oral pathological evaluation
